Cannabis 101: What is Wax?

By hahoakland

With more cannabis products to choose from than ever before, it can be easy for consumers to be overwhelmed by all of the options available to them. From cartridges to concentrates, a plethora of new and intriguing methods of cannabis consumption have reached the market, creating the need for education about many varieties of products. Cannabis wax has been available since the dawn of modern concentrates, but even many experienced cannabis users are still unfamiliar with this unique substance. For those still asking the question, “what is wax?”, here’s all of the info you need to know.

What is wax?

Wax is a type of cannabis concentrate. Concentrates are created by distilling cannabinoids within cannabis into a more potent form, through an extraction process typically involving CO2, or in some cases butane. If the manner of extraction matters to you, make sure to read product labels! This info is usually included there or on a producer’s website.

There are multiple varieties of cannabis concentrates, but wax is perhaps the most famous for its easy application and ubiquity at dispensaries across America. While cannabis concentrates range in consistency from glass-like to fine powder, wax approaches an even middle ground, possessing a texture like thick honey. It is often referred to as “budder” for its dense and sticky quality.

How is Cannabis Wax Made?

Like other types of concentrates, wax follows a similar extraction process. A solvent like butane or CO2 is used to separate compounds within cannabis from the cannabinoids which lend it potency. These cannabinoids are then distilled into a substance that can be smoked, a process typically referred to as “dabbing”.

How do I Use Cannabis Wax?

Dabbing can be complicated for inexperienced cannabis consumers. While cannabis wax can be used in a variety of ways, the most common method is the use of equipment known as a “dabbing rig”, which can usually found at your favorite dispensary.

In recent years, several intuitive methods of using cannabis wax have become available. For example, special vape pens have been created for the express purpose of vaporizing wax, in the same manner as other vape pens which are designed for cannabis flower. For those concerned with any kind of learning curve surrounding using a rig, these vape pens provide a simple way to incorporate wax into your routine.

Finally, for those looking to use their wax without any of the associated hassles, wax can simply be added to the top of a bowl to give your experience an extra kick. Even when smoked, though, wax can be extremely strong, so take care to work out your dosage carefully. If you’re trying wax for the first time, make sure to follow that age-old rule of cannabis: start low and go slow.
