Mexican Polka and Highballs: Have A Heart History

By hahoakland

At the intersection of NW 85th Street and 3rd Ave. sits Greenwood’s finest marijuana shop, Have a Heart, and the history of the building has garnered a lot of attention lately. So let us be the first to tell you why because — Have a Heart history is full of twists and turns! Today’s pleasantly clean and welcoming green-and-white checkered façade is as fine a storefront as any Seattle marijuana shop around today and gives us extra points for cosmetic detail. You certainly feel more confident entering its doors than you would a nondescript, sign-less drab brick building. Not all Seattle pot shops have been able to outfit their buildings with as much artistry and for Have a Heart Greenwood, we are grateful.

When you’re in need of Seattle weed, Have a Heart is, hands-down, the go-to pot shop in the neighborhood. Not only do they run wicked cool specials and have daily Happy Hours, they are staffed by expert budtenders who enjoy your questions and passing on their knowledge to you. The next time you’re en route to Golden Gardens Park or you just want to kick it at Green Lake, take a step in the direction of Have a Heart Greenwood, and don’t let the modern décor fool you. Here’s what this interesting building has been up to for the past few decades.

Have A Heart history: Decades before Have a Heart Greenwood or the legal recreational marijuana trade would see the light of day, this building was home to a tavern/dance club called “The Up and Up,” circa 1960s/1970s. So next time you’re eyeballing Snoop’s Dream or whatever tasty nugs you’re sizing up, picture the sordid scene that took place like a dream up to fifty years prior, Mo-Town swaying couples making love not war — was the mood. If that’s too much to fathom, picture this: one of the next incantations of the Have a Heart Greenwood building was a jazz club called The G-Note. This may have been after, but excuse our research if we don’t get the lineup chronologically right. After the jazz club went bust, it allegedly had a shot at an all-ages juice bar in the 90s, which is when, multiple first-hand-accounts describe the overall atmosphere as “shady,” which brings to mind that this was also the debut of the rave scene, and the beginnings of Ecstasy and the designer drugs that followed. We don’t know how long the ‘juice bar’ lasted, but, seriously, we highly doubt the congregation left it at …  just juice.

However, it went down as being called The Annex, officially home to raves, circa 2004-2005. The scene must have been intense at this point as we had some next-gen MDMA cocktails in circulation. So if and when you’re casually strolling the seemingly innocuous aisles of today’s Have a Heart Greenwood weed shop, picture your big sisters and uncles and aunts geeking out on some mad Molly. Thankfully, we’re too smart for that now and we don’t want to harsh our vibe or take in all that artificial junk. We’d rather leave it to Mother Nature to magically lift our spirit and mood, and we like to do it in a safe legal Greenwood pot shop!

Mind blown upon learning after the mad rave thing died out, this location was reportedly home to an actual legit alcohol-free dance/social club called The 449 Club. We think it’s pretty cool it’s been described as a “safe haven” for youth, non-drinkers and recovering addicts. Good for them! Make it work, whatever it takes, is what we say. And beyond this, there are murmurs it was at one time some sort of Mexican polka club!

It takes all kinds, and we’re just glad Have a Heart Greenwood is what it is today! We wont’ quiz you on your Have a Heart history lesson but isn’t it time you plan a trip to Have a Heart Greenwood? If you can’t make it in yet, see what’s on sale at Have a Heart  now.
