It’s difficult to choose a single best activity to pair with cannabis when the list of choices is so long. But right up there with eating and—let’s face it—sex, listening to your favorite music while high has to rank in the Top Three.
Why do music and cannabis go so well together, and what strains are best suited for listening to music while high? Read on for the melodious results.
Music While High: The Science
Since at least the dawn of the Jazz Age roughly a century ago, cannabis and popular music have been inextricably intertwined. In general, the most common explanation as to why cannabis and music are linked is the cannabis plant’s noted ability to alter our perceptions of time. Because time seems to slow down when we’re under the influence, the theory goes, our brains have more time to focus on and ponder the musical content.
But what about the unmistakable euphoria imparted by THC? It turns out that cannabidiol—better known as CBD—has a role to play here. When test subjects were given cannabis containing no CBD and asked to listen to snippets of music, MRIs of their brain activity showed decreased activity in areas of the brain associated with pleasure and reward. This phenomenon was reversed when cannabis containing CBD was administered. Just as it tends to mitigate some of THC’s less welcome effects—including disorientation and anxiety—the second-most-prevalent cannabinoid tends to increase our subjective enjoyment of music.
That’s probably enough science for one sitting. Time for some experimenting: What cannabis strains are best suited for the listening experience?
Music While High: Favorite Strains
As the study we reference suggests, a healthy dose of CBD will increase your enjoyment of music while high. Here are some favorite and typically available strains to help you reach aural nirvana:
Green Crack: This bright and energizing strain tends to lend focus for day or night use. A sativa-leaning hybrid, it balances a 15% to 25% THC content with enough CBD to provide cerebral uplift and inspiration.
Space Queen: This hybrid delivers a pleasing THC / CBD balance for relaxation bolstered with an energizing, even speedy buzz. Look for fruity, vanilla-scented aromas and a cerebral effect bordering on the trippy.
Jamaican Dream: Look for an elevated mood and an easygoing euphoria with this heavily sativa-leaning hybrid. The main sensory takeaways typically include energy, creative inspiration, and a welcome antidote to depression and tiredness.
Blue Dream: This hybrid strain is hugely popular, not only in the MMJ community but with recreational users who cherish its fast-acting euphoria, sometimes described as a “soaring head high.” Sounds, sights, aromas, and any other senses will feel swaddled, pampered and generally maximized.
Bubblegum: “Happy” is the word most often associated with this fun-loving hybrid strain. You may well feel creative inspiration and energy, including dancing to your favorite music. It’s well-loved not only for its balance of cerebral and bodily sensations but its pleasing taste and aroma.
Master Bubba: This heavy-hitting indica delivers full-body relaxation with a deep euphoria well-suited to music listening. That said, it may not be the best choice for a night spent clubbing, as one of its attributes is a powerful couch-lock. Set yourself up with a blanket and your best headphones and you’ll be good to go!
