Cannabis and the Wonderful World of Yoga While High

By hahoakland

Of all the crazy cannabis combinations popping up in the wake of cannabis legalization (chai, city tours, special lounges, MLM-style home events, the list goes on and on…), perhaps the most rewarding is the new trend of yoga while high.

Cultural Resurgence: Cannabis-Infused Yoga is Popping Up Everywhere

A new fascinating boom of “How-To-Yoga with Cannabis” articles are showing up in well-known health sites. Specialty yoga teachers are now using cannabis in the class to help deepen practice. Check out this video which clearly shows this.

The culture of yoga seems to be getting a little experimental.

Nothing New: The Tradition Goes Back Thousands of Years

But this isn’t the brainchild of stoned hippies. Not by a long shot.

It’s more a rediscovery than a new development.

The tradition of cannabis and yoga goes back thousands of years.

Cannabis is a plant sacred to the Hindu god Shiva, Lord of Yoga. Even today, Sadhus belt out praises to Shiva – Bom Bolenath Shiva Shambo! – as they smoke chillum pipes filled with charas (an especially creamy hash made without killing the plant).

There’s a little more to it than that, but you get the idea. Cannabis is an integral piece of the culture that birthed the practice of yoga.

They’re like childhood friends.

So what do you get out of it?

Yoga + Cannabis = Better Yoga + Better High

Let’s look a little closer at yoga first. Yoga is a mind-body practice.

It develops your capacity for sensory awareness and deep breathing, coordinating mind, body, and breath fluidly with conscious relaxation.

When you throw cannabis into the mix, you supercharge each of them and get high in a totally new, more holistic way.

The breath deepens with tidal force.

Senses heighten.

A simple movement expands into a kaleidoscope of kinesthetic joy as thousands of tiny muscles stretch inch by inch into an ocean sensory rapture.

The mind is absorbed into the experience – simply being, experiencing, living.

You “drop in” to the practice in a deeper, more profound way.

Your high is embodied and present. The yoga practice is deeper, more fulfilling.

It’s just better.

420 Yoga Classes: Where to Go

If you’re in Seattle, you’re in luck!

YogaSmith in Georgetown has a regular Cannabis Enhanced Yoga class on the second Sunday of the month at 4:20 pm, complete with tea and cookies after the practice to satisfy your high-vibe munchies.

Bala Yoga in Fremont and the Cedar Room in Ballard both regularly host cannabis + yoga events.

Located elsewhere? You can apply this to any yoga experience and “choose your own adventure,” then just attend a gentle flow class at your nearest studio or explore in the comforts of your own home.

Experiencing Yoga While High – Some Parting Considerations

Now before you down your favorite edible and head to a sweat-drenched hot-power-yoga class, let’s take a few things into consideration.

Your dose and your strain are the two most important parts. Check out our article Cannabis Dosing: How to Find the Optimal Dose for some basic guidelines.

The aim is to be slightly elevated. Getting too high incapacitates you and will mostly be a terrible experience, so err on the side of too little. Seriously.

As for strain, we recommend a mellow indica like Girl Scout Cookies, or come and talk to our Belltown budtenders for personal recommendations of the best incoming strains.

If you want to explore this further, this article in Leafy has some great info.

Yoga while high can be a wonderful practice, bringing you deeper into your practice and the experience of relaxation. Just proceed… mindfully.

Make sure you have the highest quality cannabis for your yoga practice. Visit your local Have a Heart dispensary.

Aum I would love to start a regular studio, in the Yelm/Olympia vicinity, where local organic cannabis is included with the classes. I've wondered exactly where the legality lies, and have opted not to open the studio in the city as of yet... However, I used to live in Seattle, and am happy to hear about people having the option! My wife took her first class at Samadhi in Capital Hill, and after we travelled through India on our 4 month pilgrimage, we settled back into the neighborhood; where she taught the last class at Samadhi! Anytime we come back into the neighborhood, we see the 'dark' tattoo parlour and mourn. While sitting back watching the Psychedelica series, on Gaiam, I was drawn to look into ghanja yoga in our area! Keep up the good work, thanks for keeping the information available! I've always practiced with cannabis, but never had the opportunity to get stoned in the classes! As a grower, extraction artist, edible creator, medical patient, and with hundreds of first hand healing experiences shared by friends and loved ones... I am always eager to see fresh ways that people are sharing cannabis! Once upon a time, I rolled joints, with a crew of people to pass out at 4:19 by the 10,000s each day! I've been a truth seeker for most of my life, and saw cannabis aka Kaneh'Bos aka Kaneh Bosm and it's plethora of uses and medical benefits! As much as I've seen from ceasing the fluctuations of consciousness, with yoking ones ambitions And dreams, to their greatest good... To following their bliss. To deliberately dream awake, consciously manifesting through the law of attraction. I'd like to dream. Awake this all into a cohesive temple that houses the Lokah Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu vibration! With an Ubuntu irrie smash up, bringing the sacred herbs to a community of people all focused on their inner work, in a network that is supporting to a highly productive atmosphere. One day I'd like to see the RFRA synergistically work for all truth seekers! To provide transportation from where we are now, to allow us to see what we need to work on, and let us do the work! I believe smoking some cannabis while having some integration and vinyasa flow... Will aid in the process of controlling the mind, with the breath and postures! Let alone provide an atmosphere for amazing bhakti devotion, and satsang of devotees! To work on achieving altered states with bundha and breathwork, it's much easier when we are stoned and able to silence the chatter of the mind... And posturing is one of the best stepping stones to our own evolutions. As we move through the asanas, we learn so much about our selves. Wouldn't it be nice, if we all could take a retreat, and flood our bodies with nutrients. Flood all our koshas with whatever they lack... And eventually return from this sabadical, back into our lives, born anew, with the vigor of out highest self? To eat raw and vegan wholesome foods, to develop a practice that embodies all 8 limbs, whilst learning how to integrate the techniques and listen to your bodies talk! To even embody an Ayahuasca ceremony to align your spirit, mind, emotions, and the physical body... Before returning to your old norm? I think it all starts with ghanja yoga, as a stepping off place. A launching off place, who knows where this rocket of desire will land! Maybe luxurious retreat centers around the world... Where we can provide the atmosphere for others to tune in, turn on, and drop out... To transform themselves, into their highest self... To follow their bliss, and transmute this awareness to event horizons that coalesce a critical mass of people meditating and tesseracting the cosmological consciousness/noosphere into the next paradigms! Aho
