Some cannabis strains are so popular that their names have become a part of pop culture. That’s definitely the case with Kush, but only a few of us can actually answer this simple question: What does Kush mean?
As with all things in the cannabis world, the answer can be quite simple or quite complex, depending on how deep you’re willing to dive. Jump in with us into the story of this ancient and fascinating member of the cannabis family!
What Does Kush Mean? Landrace Cannabis from the Top of the World
Deep in Southeast Asia, where the far eastern tip of Afghanistan meets the top of Pakistan, a harsh and forbidding mountain range straddles the two nations: Welcome to the Hindu Kush.
The Hindu Kush range forms the western edge of the Himalayas, which include Mt. Everest, the tallest peak in the world. If its mountainsides are rocky and unyielding, the valleys between them are famous for their fertile soil and lush vegetation. And since time immemorial, farmers there have grown an unusually potent strain of native indica cannabis here.
Unlike sativa, which originated in Eastern Asia, indica strains are known both for their short, stocky and bushlike structure and for the powerful, sedative and body-centered highs. Kush is considered a “landrace” cannabis, which implies several meanings.
For one, it’s native to the area, and thus has adapted specifically to that natural environment. For another, it’s largely been isolated from other species, so it’s considered a botanically pure example of its kind. Especially in an environment in which many cannabis strains are carefully-bred hybrids, this is an important distinction for some cannabis fans, suggesting a deep connection to the plant’s original habitat.
What Does Kush Mean? Strain Characteristics
As we mentioned earlier, pure indica cannabis is known for its strongly relaxing cerebral effects, and Kush doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Many describe it as deeply meditative, with a lively euphoria that invites quiet reflection. Look for equally powerful sedative effects: Consuming a bowl will probably not make you want to leap up to hit the dance floor.
But there’s more to this ancient strain. One reason Kush is so popular in flower form is because of its intensely aromatic bud. You may detect whiffs of damp, pungent earth, pine trees, and spicy incense, hash, pepper, and gas, among others. The appearance will typically be deep green, with orange or rust-colored pistils.
Our Favorite Kush Strains
Although our stock changes frequently depending on what’s fresh, we usually offer a selection of Kush strains to try. Here are a few of our favorites!
OG Kush is a potent high-THC strain, and its piney, peppery and earthy aromas lead many fans to label it the ultimate “dank” weed. Its pleasurable effects include strong euphoria and general uplift, but be forewarned: It can exhibit powerful “couch lock”!
Stephen Hawking Kush is a mild, relaxing strain. While the famous, late physicist played no part in creating it, we like to think he would have appreciated its healthy dose of CBD. This Kush strain is known for its gentle euphoria, granting the type’s famous heady and soothing effects.
Sour Kush is a flavorful heavy hitter, imparting a strong effect on the body. But while it’s cerebrally energetic, it also imparts a calming effect to the thought processes. This strain is fairly bitter and sour, but you’ll detect classic Kush flavors of floral sweetness, spicy, and pleasing hashish as well.
