In our latest series, we’re introducing you to the stories behind Oakland’s top equity brands. This week we spoke with John Harlow of Strange Lands on how he produces some of the best flower in Northern California using quality genetics and living soil.
Decades of Experience and an Authentic Purpose
John has been in the industry for a long time. He started growing soon after prop 215 was passed in 1996. Banding with a crew of friends and artists that didn’t fit into the corporate world, he wanted to create something that represented the counterculture that cannabis originated from.
Much of his time in the early days was spent operating small craft grows for Bay Area dispensaries. This allowed him to hone his craft and to experiment growing cannabis every way imaginable. While his mother and father fought cancer, John was able to help alleviate their struggle by growing high-quality medicinal grade flower. He’s even created two Cannabis Cup winning strains; Jack Frost and Candy Jack.
After qualifying for the Oakland Cannabis Equity Program, John formed Strange Lands. Their mission is to spread the awareness of cannabis as a healing plant and to help more people get in touch with themselves on a deeper level.
Top Shelf Indoor Flower, Grown in Living Soil
Living soil forms the foundation for all of Strange Lands’ grows. They mend the soil with all the basic nutrients needed and feed organic teas along the plant’s life cycle. No salt fertilizers are ever added, and no soil is ever thrown out. Since the soil itself is a living organism, Strange Lands nurtures it with the respect it deserves. The result is higher THC, CDB, and terpene levels than other methods can achieve. In short, this is top-shelf indoor flower, grown in the most organic way possible.
Some great Strange Land strains to pick up from Have a Heart include Banana Punch and Mimosa. Banana Punch has a hazy, tropical flavor with notes of banana and freshly cut pineapple. It gives a mellow calming high, that will relax you from head to toe. Mimosa has a citrusy fruit punch flavor, that’s perfect for relaxed social gatherings. If you’re going to a dinner party and want to be social but chilled out, this Indicia leaning hybrid is a perfect choice.
Looking Forward
In the coming months Strange Lands will be focusing more on producing enlightening Sativas and staying true to their artistic background. We’re incredibly excited to see what comes next from these dedicated and talented growers. You can learn more about Strange Lands from their website: letsgetstrange.com
