We love gritty taquerias and food trucks as much as the next budtenders, but not all Mexican food is created equal. Tamayo offers a feast for all the senses, combining fresh, vibrant and colorful Mexican specialties such as springy scallop ceviche, smokey and warming tortilla soup, and a showstopping cochinita pibil—citrus-marinated pork slow-cooked in banana leaves—with an art gallery and even a cantina claiming to serve “LA’s best margarita.”

El Cafetalito
5300 E Washington Blvd, Commerce, CA 90040
(323) 268-2837
Those unaccustomed to the foods of El Salvador could be excused with confusing it with the foods of Mexico, its larger neighbor to the north. But the dishes of this tiny Central American nation pack an outsized punch: Start with steaming-hot pupusas, savory, tortilla-like pockets filled with delicious treats like melted cheese, shredded pork, and other surprises. Salty-sweet fried plantains served with crema and silky pureed beans speak to the nation’s tropical latitude, and by the time you make it to the crisp-skinned roast chicken, you may be ready to grab your passport.

Nina’s Cafe
2805 E Gage Ave, Huntington Park, CA 90255
(323) 484-9803
This charming little cafe is a neighborhood standby, and it’s easy to see why. Simple, French-inspired dishes like traditional sweet and savory buckwheat crepes and panini sandwiches appear alongside fluffy waffles, eggs Benedict, and other yummy breakfast treats. Reliable espresso creations like cappuccino, cafe latte, and macchiato only up the ante, and perhaps your heart rate as well….

Yaya’s Burgers
3202 E Gage Ave, Huntington Park, CA 90255
(323) 581-2383
This tiny, casual standby is a bit of a head-scratcher, but it’s a mystery worth solving. Yes, you’ll find a slew of burger options, but the real jackpot may be the large and satisfying Mexican-style breakfasts served here, like chilaquiles—fried tortillas in a savory tomato-and-onion sauce—and that old standby huevos rancheros. That said, you can’t visit without sampling “La Especialidad de la Casa”: The large selection of tortas, the addictive sandwich of Mexico served on squishy rolls. Pro tip: You’ll want to buy an extra for later.
