Meet Kabuki Brands: Premium Northern California Cannabis Curators

By hahoakland

In our latest series, we’re introducing you to the stories behind Oakland’s top equity brands. This week we spoke with Mich and Doug Dawkins, the sibling duo supplying Oakland with high-quality, family grown Northern California cannabis. Kabuki is the creator of Authentic and Superfly flower lines, and a distributor of Stoned Age edibles.

Long Lasting Relationships Deliver Quality Buds

Back in 2009 Mich and Doug noticed that there was a lack of information about the cannabis being sold in California. People often didn’t know what was in the product they were buying or where it came from. To help solve this problem, they founded Mary+Plus to properly test, brand, and package the incredible flowers coming out of Mendocino and Humboldt Counties. They began by teaming up with family cultivators to help them property package and distribute their products. This ensured that the product arriving in the Bay Area was properly preserved, while providing NorCal growers with a steady, reliable income.

After briefly exiting the market due to pressure to from federal government, Mich & Doug founded Kabuki in 2017 and became one of the first companies to obtain a distribution license in Humboldt County. The relationships that they earlier created paid off, as they were able to quickly develop a steady supply line of high-quality, family grown buds from an area notoriously difficult to reliably source from.

Integrity and Tradition Produces Quality Cannabis

Kabuki doesn’t buy flower from just any cultivator. They take the time to get to know growers, their process, and their product. This includes conducting a thorough inspection of the farm, reviewing the strain lineages, testing the products, and making sure that the growers behind the product are great quality people.

Because of this rigorous process, Kabuki almost always ends up working with local families. This is especially seen in their Authentic flower line. One of their leading suppliers is a family run operation where the mother, father, and all 3 kids have worked to create incredible quality cannabis for decades. Buying Authentic helps support these older growers who have been perfecting their craft for longer than many of us have been alive.

Tried, Tested, and Loved for Years

The Authentic line focuses on traditional strains and legacy growers. This includes both old school strains that have been loved by generations of smokers, as well as farmers who have been cultivating their own in-house genetics since before prop 215. If you follow the strains Authentic offers, Mich will take you on a journey through time of classic Northern California cannabis. And this wonderful journey can now be taken at reduced prices, thanks to Authentic’s effort to make top-shelf legacy cannabis accessible to everyone.

We especially recommend their Baby Yoda and Big Berry strains next time you stop by Have a Heart. You can learn more about Kabuki Brands by visiting their website here: kabukibrands.com
