Find Your Zen with Cannabis and Meditation

By hahoakland

Today, many people who practice meditation are bringing cannabis into their practice. It’s a no-brainer combination. Both bring you more into the present and have the potential to relax your mind and body.

In fact, research has shown that meditation can result in small to moderate reductions of multiple negative dimensions of psychological stress and anxiety. And cannabis has been shown to calm our bodies and bring us to the present. Meditating while high is a perfect combination.

If you are new to meditation or cannabis, or both, you need to do a little research first to decide on a good location and the appropriate consumable.

This post will explain how to bring these two ancient practices together to deepen your experience.

Meditating While High: What Strain Should I Use?

Cannabis can be tricky to work with in general, but especially for spiritual practices like meditation. Many factors can influence the experience—dosage, strain, frequency of use, your state of mind, and location.

Strain is one of the most important factors. As Jessie Gill, a registered nurse who specializes in medical marijuana put it, “The strain you choose when you meditate steers your experience.”

There are many strains that can work with meditation. Here are a few:

  • Lambs Bread
  • Granddaddy Purple
  • Sour Jack
  • Blue Dream
  • Northern Lights

As for location, you can meditate anywhere: a mountain top, your bedroom, standing in line at the DMV, even public transportation. But you can’t meditate while high everywhere.

Meditating While High In 6 Easy Steps

To achieve the best experience here are basic steps to follow:

  1. Search for a quiet place with few distractions. Somewhere safe where nobody is depending on you for anything for at least 20 minutes.
  2. Settle into a comfortable pose. Sit on a cushion, cross-legged, on the floor. If you use a chair, sit with your back straight and your feet on the floor. You can also lie on your back with a pillow under your head. (If you are using an edible, time it so that it will kick in when you start. If you are inhaling, place your cannabis close by.)
  3. Inhale and exhale deeply and slowly a few times until you are relaxed.
  4. Take your cannabis and inhale once. Bring your attention to your body. Release tension in each section of your body, from your feet to your head.
  5. Take another inhale of cannabis. Bring attention to your breath as you inhale and exhale. If you get distracted, calmly return focus to your breath.
  6. Observe the high. Notice how it makes you feel and changes your breathing. Don’t try to control anything. Just observe what you’re feeling.

Ending Your Practice

Conclude your practice by reminding yourself of your intention and compare the way you feel now with the way you started. Don’t judge your practice. It’s not a competition.

As long as you don't use it as a crutch. Don't get to the point where you need to be high to meditate. It can enhance your sit, but seeking those heightened states of consciousness goes against the practice. By seeking, by craving those states, you're activating the hindrance of sensual desire, related to the defilement of Greed. Because you're not always gonna get those altered states of awareness, and then you're disappointed when you don't, thus causing yourself suffering. Point of the matter, it makes for wonderful sits, but don't overdo it, and don't place too much expectation on yourself when you do.
