Across the many tempting cannabis-infused edibles across the web, one ingredient makes frequent appearances: cannabutter. The versatility and necessity of cannabis-infused butter to the budding edible chef cannot be overstated, as cannabutter is capable of transforming many simple meals into magnificent infused dishes. Too often, though, those recipes result in a huge batch of cannabutter. If you don’t plan on cooking or baking a lot, that butter can go bad. For those seeking to craft their own batch of this delectable and potent material, here is everything you need to know about how to make just one stick of cannabutter.
Ingredients for Making Cannabutter
The ingredients for making cannabutter are relatively intuitive, although the cannabutter recipe itself can be modified in a number of ways to achieve different outcomes. All you need to make just one stick of cannabutter is about 7 grams of cannabis (you can use more or less depending on your tolerance), the aforementioned stick of butter, a saucepan, and a suitable cloth for straining.
When making cannabutter, it’s crucial that you get the ingredients just right. The quality of your cannabis-infused butter will depend on the quality of your ingredients, so make sure you’re using the best stuff. The potency of your cannabutter will be impacted by the variety of cannabis used, so do the proper amount of research on your cannabis before mixing it into your butter.
As the flavor of the cannabis will be readily apparent when tasting your cannabutter, certain measures can be taken to mask the overbearing nature of the flavor or otherwise complement it. For example, garlic can be added to your cannabutter to create garlic cannabutter, and it can be worth experimenting with other common additives to butter, like parmesan, thyme, or any combination of these.
How to Make Cannabutter
Even for edible novices, the process of making cannabutter is easy if you follow the proper steps. The first step in creating cannabutter is to grind your cannabis into a finer form, though not so fine as to make it into a powder. Your aim is to be able to evenly distribute your cannabis throughout the butter.
As with most recipes involving cannabis, you should decarboxylate your cannabis first by heating it in the oven at a temperature of around 240 degrees. Decarboxylation is an important process that unlocks the potency within cannabis, as cannabinoids that contain THC are “activated” to release the full potential of the cannabis. Be careful not to leave your cannabis in for too long, as you may end up burning the cannabis. Typically, 25 minutes is more than enough to properly decarboxylate your bud.
In the meantime, fill your pot about halfway with water and slice your butter. Put your butter into a metal bowl (we’re making a double boiler). Once your bud is decarbed, add it to the butter and turn on your stove. Place your bowl over the pot of water and bring it to a simmer (don’t let it boil!). Stir the butter mix so it melts and incorporates. Ideally, you should leave the butter over the water for about three hours, but that’s a long time. Do leave it over simmering water for at least 45 minutes so that it infuses well. Once you feel you’re good to go, turn off the stove and strain your butter through cheesecloth to remove particulates. Let your butter cool or use immediately!
