Cannabis Academy: How to Properly Use a Cannabis Tincture

By hahoakland

While there are many methods of dosing cannabis available to consumers in the modern market, different forms of cannabis carry with them their own advantages and disadvantages. The most common way of dosing cannabis is still the simple pipe, but recent advancements in recreational and medical legalization have made the production of a slew of new products possible.

Tinctures are an increasingly popular form of cannabis, with their efficiency and discretion appreciated by many experienced members of the cannabis community. Though tinctures can be more expensive than other cannabis products at times, it is worth getting to know what makes cannabis tinctures such a unique method of dosing.

What Are Cannabis Tinctures?

Cannabis tinctures are bottles of potent essence created by infusing cannabis with alcohol. These bottles typically come equipped with a dropper for easy application of the tincture to oral areas, like the bottom of the tongue. Tinctures are known to be relatively fast-acting, as the membrane within the mouth quickly absorbs THC into the bloodstream.

Tinctures are actually one of the oldest methods of dosing cannabis in America, as drugstores of the 19th and early 20th centuries often carried cannabis as a remedy for certain ailments before the onset of prohibition. In the modern legalization environment, tinctures are a popular selection at medical dispensaries for their overall ease of use.

Different Types of Cannabis Tinctures

Just as there are many different strains of cannabis available for sale, so too will the qualities of a tincture be determined by the cannabis used to make it. Always check the distinctions between tinctures on any cannabis menu, especially as the packaging of tinctures can end up looking similar at times. For example, indica-based tinctures will have different effects than sativa tinctures, as indica tinctures can be more geared towards rest and relaxation while sativas are renowned for their mood-enhancing capabilities.

Likewise, cannabis tinctures will differ in their levels of potency. Whereas some tinctures will test at high quantities of THC, others may be designed for low-dose users who cannot handle the overbearing high imparted by powerful cannabis. Ultimately, it can be worth exploring several varieties of tincture to discover what is best for the individual.

How to Use a Cannabis Tincture

Cannabis tinctures are perhaps the simplest method of cannabis consumption available on the market. All that is required to use a tincture is a dropper, which is usually attached to the lid of the bottle already.

Unscrew the bottle and use your dropper to collect a small amount of tincture from inside. Then, apply the tincture to the underside of the tongue, making sure it is evenly distributed to the bottom of the mouth. The cannabis essence should begin to quickly take effect, though more drops can be added if the tincture was not as strong as you preferred. Always use caution when dosing cannabis, and take at least 15 minutes between each dose to ensure any effects have already settled in.
