The 3 Best Stoner Comedies with Funny Female Leads

By hahoakland

We all love a good cannabis movie. But weed culture and movies tend to be missing something big—women! When you picture your average movie stoner, you probably think of a dude, right? But what about the female tokers?

Stoner classics will always have a special place in our hearts, and weed movies have evolved quite a bit since the days of Cheech and Chong. Films like Seth Rogen’s Knocked Up and Pineapple Express are hilarious—and even have women playing some of the more significant roles.

The problem with modern stoner comedies is that women are portrayed as annoying nags, rather than friends smoking and having fun with the guys. The good news is that more cannabis movies and shows are starting to showcase women in a more positive, cannabis-friendly light. Check out our three favorites:

Cannabis Movies With Funny Women

Smiley Face

Never heard of it? That’s OK; most people haven’t. This movie basically invented the female stoner comedy, but the world may not have been ready when it debuted in 2009. In this hilarious gem, an out-of-work actress named Jane (Anna Faris) accidentally eats a whole batch of her weirdo roommate’s cannabis cupcakes. She spends a disastrous day trying to make things right by baking more, only to exacerbate the situation with one stoner goof-up after another.

Although it didn’t get much recognition when it came out, Smiley Face holds up well after ten years. It’s precisely what you need if you are craving more positive female stoner vibes in your life. See this one ASAP because it’s hilarious enough to sit on the shelf next to classics like Half Baked, Dazed and Confused, and The Big Lebowski.

Annie Hall

One of the earliest stoner comedies—or rather a rom-com showing a woman smoking—is Woody Allen’s 1977 classic Annie Hall. Before the premiere of Cheech and Chong’s famous 1978 hit Up in Smoke, few films addressed marijuana in a positive way. While Annie Hall didn’t promote the use of cannabis, it featured mature characters talking about the effect of marijuana on their relationship and lifestyle.

Annie (Diane Keaton) enjoys smoking before sex, while her partner Alvy (Woody Allen) thinks that it promotes artificial intimacy. The scene isn’t full of stereotypical stoners getting high, it’s a real woman talking about her real life and how cannabis helps her. If you haven’t seen this Oscar-winning comedy, you’ll want to. It’s pretty groundbreaking in the way it deals with both the obstacles of modern romance and cannabis.

Broad City

Ok, ok, this one’s not a movie, but we had to include it.

When Broad City came out on Comedy Central in 2014, it instantly became the female stoner comedy we were all missing. The show revolves around two broke girls living in New York who can pack their own bongs and roll their own joints—the likes of which hadn’t been seen in pop culture.

Broad City’s positive attitude towards confident, female smokers is very refreshing. These weed kweens are funny, relatable, and give a voice to a big part of the stoner community that entertainment tends to ignore. Let’s hope that the popularity of this show leads to a new wave of cannabis movies and shows with awesome female leading roles.

Society’s perception of the female cannabis user is changing fast. The ‘boys club’ that most stoner movies portray isn’t real, and the image of the female stoner is undergoing a total transformation. It’s an exciting time for stoner chicks who have been waiting to see themselves accurately represented in comedy. We can’t wait to see what’s next!
