Infusing Edibles: How to Make Cannabis Coconut Oil

By hahoakland

When it comes to making edibles, it’s helpful to have versatile ingredients on hand. While most edibles can be crafted using ground cannabis, applying cannabis oil instead can have benefits that impact everything from potency to the flavor of your edible. Cannabis coconut oil, for example, is a relatively simple way to infuse a variety of dishes without experiencing that overbearing cannabis flavor. If you’re looking to concoct your own batch, here’s what you should know before getting started.

Ingredients for Making Cannabis Coconut Oil

The major ingredients for making cannabis coconut oil are exceedingly simple. Though subtle modifications can be made, all you will need is ground cannabis and coconut oil. Before selecting your ingredients, it’s important to keep in mind that the quality of your ingredients will greatly affect the final result of your recipe, so stop by your nearest Have a Heart location for quality bud.

While it may be tempting to opt for cheaper choices, you’ll get betters results by using cannabis that has the consistency, flavor, and potency that you want. Flavor should be a secondary concern to the effects of the cannabis itself, but every aspect of your cannabis coconut oil will be impacted by your flower selection.

In making your oil, it is highly recommended that you decarboxylate your ground cannabis before using it in your recipe. Decarboxylation is the process of baking your cannabis to “unlock” its potency, as heat expresses the psychoactive components that naturally occur within cannabis. To achieve decarboxylation, place your ground cannabis on a baking sheet and leave it in the oven at about 250 degrees. Within 30 minutes, your cannabis should be sufficiently decarboxylated to full efficiency.

How to Make Cannabis Coconut Oil

To begin making cannabis coconut oil, pour 1 cup of coconut oil into a double boiler and place over a low flame. Add your cannabis and mix it thoroughly. You should be aiming for an even distribution of cannabis, as clumps of cannabis can be problematic for your final result. Stir the cannabis and coconut oil occasionally over the course of around 8 hours. Water may be applied to the mixture as necessary to prevent your oil from scorching.

After your oil is done simmering, simply strain it into a mason jar or other suitable container using a cheesecloth. If enough has been collected, can store any leftover flower material for use in other recipes. Your cannabis coconut oil will last for over two months if kept in proper conditions, and at any time you can refrigerate your oil to lengthen its shelf life.

Using Your Newly Infused Oil

Though cannabis coconut oil can be substituted in most recipes that call for a type of oil, the uses for this signature ingredient are wider than one might expect. For example, many beverages can be infused by simply stirring in a few drops, and may offer a milder flavor compared to other cannabis-based additives.

To this end, cannabis coffee can be easily made by mixing in your infused coconut oil. While the overall psychoactive effects may be somewhat muted compared to other types of edibles, cannabis coconut oil can provide an easy buzz on otherwise dreary days.
