While some of us will always love the tactile experience of rolling a fat joint or packing a full bowl, a growing subset of cannabis fans swear by vaporizing. As we’ve written before, this cutting-edge technology works by heating either cannabis flower or a potent cannabis extraction to a lower temperature than burning it. The idea is that by getting the material just hot enough to release its precious cannabinoids and terpenes in a cool vapor, you’ll get all the benefits of the cannabis plant without the potentially harsh smoke released by combustion.
That said, if you vape flower there’s a catch: What do you do with all that already vaped bud? Read on for the surprising answers!
Reuse, Recycle: Making the Most of Already Vaped Bud
Even if you’ve already vaped your flower, it turns out there’s hope of a second life. While already vaped bud won’t be as potent or flavorful as fresh product, it’s not yet time to chuck it in the compost. Here are some ideas of how to make the most of it:
Make Cannabutter
Start by saving the buds from several vape sessions. You’ll use it to make a rich and flavorful cannabutter, suitable for making edibles or infusing any food with a potent cannabis-powered kick. Just follow our simple recipe, just keeping in mind that because you’ve applied heat to the already vaped bud, you can skip the decarboxylation step.
Make a Cannabis Tincture
This is a simple but effective homemade version of the more complex cannabis tinctures we sell ourselves. Again, already vaped bud won’t be as potent as fresh flower, but you’ll be surprised at how potent a carefully made homemade tincture can get!
All you need to do is collect a decent amount of already vaped bud; we suggest starting with enough to at least half-fill an 8-ounce Mason jar. Obviously, the more raw material you being with, the stronger the finished product will be.
Next, grind the already vaped bud to as fine a consistency as you can manage. You can use a purpose-built cannabis tool, an ordinary spice grinder, or in a pinch the flat edge of a kitchen knife. Place it in the jar, and cover with a high-quality, high-proof grain alcohol such as Everclear. Fill to an inch or so above the bud, cover tightly, and store in a dark place.
Now all you need to do is wait, although shaking the jar every other day or so will aid the extraction process. After four to six weeks—depending on your patience—strain the tincture through a very fine filter or cheesecloth, and check its potency with a few drops. Go easy; even though these were “used” buds, there should still be plenty of potency left!
Got Already Vaped Bud? Eat It!
If you love the smoky, toasty flavor of already vaped bud, all you need to do is to sprinkle some on a snack. We suggest S’mores, though any rich and fatty food will do (cannabis, if you’ll recall, is fat-soluble). Here’s one version of this “recipe,” if it can even be called that. Remember, as with our cannabutter recipe, you can skip the decarboxylation step.
